A governance reviewer needs to understand who was responsible for an automated action, which authority permitted it, and what evidence supports the reported outcome. Machine identity can help organize those answers. It does not, by itself, demonstrate compliance with a law, standard, or internal policy.

## Translate the requirement into a question

Instead of starting with a broad “AI compliance” label, identify the review question. For example: who authorized an invoice assistant to access the source documents, and who approved the final adjustment? The necessary evidence will be different from that required to assess model quality or personal-data processing.

## Connect evidence to responsibility

Record the agent identity, owning workspace, permitted task, captured action references, and relevant human decisions. Keep the policy or checklist version used in the review where your workflow supports it. This gives later reviewers context for interpreting an event rather than only a timestamp.

The [reconciliation example](https://www.truthlocks.com/industries/financial-services#treasury-reconciliation) illustrates the distinction: a signed record can preserve an exception’s recorded resolution, while authorization of a financial adjustment remains with the responsible process.

## Inspect coverage and gaps

- Which systems and event types are connected?
- Which permissions are actually enforced by receiving tools?
- Can a reviewer follow an approval to the exact record version involved?
- What happens when an evidence source is unavailable?
- How are records retained and provided to authorized reviewers?

A missing event is a gap to explain. A completed workflow status is a report from that workflow, not an independent assessment of the entire organization’s controls.

## Use the records in a human review

Bring the relevant identity and action history into the team’s existing governance process. Let the responsible reviewers assess whether the evidence is sufficient and whether further source checks are necessary. Keep their decisions and follow-up actions connected to the same business reference.
